Semester Reflection

Learning Objectives:
1. Expand on ability to visually and conceptually capture a person, place, or idea
a. Practiced through collection of images, observation sketches, and data
2. Develop interpersonal research skills by learning different ways to collect and analyze data
a. Practiced through surveying, interviewing, observations, requesting permissions, and interacting with other people in a specific environment
b. Measured through number of responses and granted requests from locations.
3. Synthesize and explain diverse materials in a cohesive and legible way
a. Practiced through creating a presentation/exhibit space for the project to stand on its own
b. Measured through people's understanding and reception of the data in a public symposium.

Throughout the semester, the learning objectives were achieved in a myriad of different ways. My ability to visually and conceptually capture a person, place or idea grew in both the conceptualizing observations and in practice through observation sketches. It also opened my eyes to how every small detail in design that makes up the overall atmosphere and perception of a place. Examples of this are shown in my Panera observations, where things such as the layout of the gallery wall, the patterning on the carpet, the color of the decor, and the lighting fixtures all work together to create a cohesive aesthetic and atmosphere that impact how people interact with the space.

As far as practice developing interpersonal research skills while implementing different parts of the project, I had some interesting experiences. While I expected for there to be more difficulty in using so many different locations (and thereby having more people I needed to correspond with), I did not expect there to be such a huge setback in time while waiting to hear back from people or schedule meetings to pitch the project. After a little intervention from my wonderful faculty mentor, I learned that I had hit the point where I needed to stop planning and start doing. Once I started, everything became so much easier and less stressful. Collaboration with others is something that needs action more than formalities.

Synthesizing information has always been a strength of mine. While this objective is something that I will be exploring further next semester, the fact sheet that will be posted soon shows one instance of this. The rest of the information will be more thoroughly synthesized and displayed in gallery exhibits next semester.

All in all, I feel like I accomplished a lot through this project throughout the semester. While the project was not how I originally imagined it, the end product has become a better display of the concepts rather than the original process I had imagined. While I still hope to go back and fulfill my originally intended process at some point (merely for curiosity's sake if anything), I feel that the project as it has come to be this semester has a much better basis/process.
